Girona vs Real Sociedad | La Liga Preview

Girona will be desperate for points when they welcome Real Sociedad to the Estadi Municipal de Montilivi on Thursday evening, with both sides struggling for consistency in what has been a disappointing campaign for different reasons.

The hosts find themselves in serious relegation trouble, sitting 18th in the table with just 39 points from 35 matches. Their recent form makes for grim reading, with just one win in their last ten league outings. Looking at their last five matches specifically, Girona have managed only four points from a possible fifteen, scoring a meager five goals while conceding eight. Their attacking struggles are evident throughout the season, averaging just over a goal per game at 1.1, while defensively they've been porous, shipping 1.5 goals per match on average.

Real Sociedad arrive in marginally better shape but hardly convincing form themselves. The Basque side sit eighth on 44 points, still within touching distance of European qualification but their recent performances suggest they're drifting rather than pushing forward. Their last five matches have yielded seven points, including three draws, with six goals scored and seven conceded. Like their hosts, La Real have struggled to find the back of the net consistently, though they do boast a slightly better overall average of 1.5 goals per game.

Both teams have played 35 matches, so fatigue shouldn't be a differentiating factor, though Girona's relegation battle may provide the extra motivation needed to find another gear in these crucial final weeks.

The injury list makes for concerning reading for both managers. Girona will be without goalkeeper Marc ter Stegen due to a hamstring problem, while Juan Carlos and Portu are sidelined with knee injuries. Viktor Vanat is also unavailable through injury, and Donny van de Beek remains questionable with an Achilles tendon issue. These absences severely limit their options, particularly in attack where goals have been hard to come by.

Real Sociedad have their own concerns with Alvaro Odriozola ruled out through injury and Orri Oskarsson suspended after accumulating yellow cards. Goncalo Guedes is doubtful with a toe injury, while Jon Karrikaburu faces a late fitness test on an ankle problem. Igor Zubeldia's muscle injury also leaves him questionable, potentially weakening their defensive options.

The head-to-head record slightly favors Real Sociedad, who won the reverse fixture 2-1 back in December. Looking at their recent meetings, La Real have had the upper hand with victories in three of the last five encounters, though Girona did manage to secure a memorable 2-1 win at the Reale Arena in May 2025. The matches between these sides tend to be tight affairs, with four of the last five producing under 2.5 goals.

Unfortunately, no referee has been assigned to this fixture yet, which removes one tactical consideration from the equation.

Given Girona's desperate need for points and home advantage, they may find the extra motivation to grind out a result. However, their poor form and injury problems suggest they'll struggle to create clear-cut chances. Real Sociedad, while hardly impressive themselves, possess slightly more quality and should have enough to edge a low-scoring affair.

Prediction: Girona 0-1 Real Sociedad
